Product Description

La Crosse Technology EA-3010U Handheld Travel Anemometer with backlight and included Neck lanyard

For sailors, surfers, hang-gliders, or kite-fliers, this nifty gadget is a must-have for keeping tabs on current wind conditions. The tiny handheld anemometer comes in a sporty, yellow, plastic, weather-resistant casing, making it ideal for use during water activities or rainy weather. About 5 seconds after powering up, the anemometer reports the current wind speed in either miles per hour, kilometers per hour, meters per second, or Knots plus, displays wind speed on a Beaufort Scale bar graph. The module also records the maximum and average wind speeds for any 2- to 10-second period of time, and recalls them at the user’s prompting. This anemometer also measures current temperature in Fahrenheit or Celsius and wind chill. The LCD screen has a backlight, making the display easy to read even in low-light conditions. The display automatically turns off every 8 seconds in order to preserve the life of the 3-volt lithium cell battery. This anemometer comes with a handy neck band to help prevent you from losing it in foul weather, and is covered by a one-year warranty.

Better than guessing the wind speed when you're out in the weather, this handy little anemometer fits in one's pocket -- might even get lost in there! It is very lightweight, easy to use -- just turn it on, hold it in the windstream, and read the results on a nicely-sized LCD panel.

I looked around for a product that would suit my needs and landed on this one. The price seemed fair but I have not heard anything about La Crosse. I have always used Kestrel but I didn't want to pay the price for a Kestrel. I needed something basic to give me an idea what wind speeds were for flying a RC. The product arrived as expected and I was surprised that it was so small. I think it could fit inside a pack of cigarettes. I have to say that photos can be misleading, BUT, the size of the product actually fits my needs better than what I had anticipated; I didn't want to lug around something as big as a Kestrel. It will easily fit in your shirt pocket, has a lanyard, and appears to work perfectly. I will be purchasing another one as the price is just right for a nice little product that works.

-Great For a Science Project

This anemometer seems pretty good to me. I needed one for my daughter's science project, and this one had a great price. It also seemed to satisfy the needs for the project... In other words, it was perfect enough for my daughter. After her science project was finished, it was just very fun to have for my daughter, especially on windy days. Even if it wasn't a windy day, all of the kids like to test it on the fan. I don't really know how accurate it is, but it works just fine for my kids' educational purposes. It is easy to use and portable.

One of the reasons I bought this was to assist me as a newbie in radio control model aircraft flying. Landing is made more difficult as the wind becomes stronger, especially if the landing is not directly into the wind.

When simply blowing at the impeller of this anemometer and watching it gradually slow and stop, I was struck at how unbalanced it is as manifested by the impeller usually rotating in the opposite direction at least a small amount just as it stops. The only explanation I can think of is that the heavier side of the impeller is going to the bottom. When using this machine in the wind, there is a mild but definite vibration -- again, the only thing that I can think of is imbalance.

With radio control airplanes, balancing the propeller is important to avoid imbalance that can cause vibration which could lead to weakening of the airframe and loss of the model in a crash. With the anemometer, the impeller bearings may wear excessively, but this type of anemometer seems to me unlikely to be used sufficiently for that to happen. Accuracy, especially at low wind speeds, would be my main concern.

I put this into my auto's windstream and it agreed with the speedometer from about 10 to 60 mph. So it seems reasonably well calibrated.

I'm going to keep this. The price is reasonable. The electronics and display are well done. But I'm disappointed that a simple and important step, balancing the impeller, was not done to make this a much better product.

I have to confess: an anemometer had been as object of desire for some time. Initially I got a fancy weather station that included one, but that didn't work so well because installation of the gauge was a huge hassle (find a good spot by reading the extensive manual and looking around, climb up on the roof, get it solidly nailed, etc.). And then the weather station itself died a definitive death and that was it. A pity, because I love to monitor and study the weather where I live -- huge storms and high winds, everything turning around in a matter of minutes.

A handheld anemometer, now that seemed like a great idea! I went for it. Happily I was one of those customers whose unit did not come with a dead battery, and I had it up and running in a few minutes -- helped by the clear, instructive manual which also explains the Beaufort Scale. Configuring it was easy, and I like it that you can choose units (I'm metric).

There is no way I can tell how accurate the wind meter's measurements are, but it is such fun to use it! It will give me current wind speed, maximum and average wind speeds, temperature and windchill. It is weather-resistant and there's a backlight so you can see the readings in low light conditions. It comes with a lanyard but no protective case to store it in, so I got a Case Logic Small Universal Pocket (
Caselogic UNZ-2 Small Universal Pocket w/Screen Protection(Black/Silver) ) and the fit is perfect. Now I'm set to monitor the crazy climate I live in.

Smaller than I thought it would be which can be a positive or a negative. Would be nice to have the option to be able to set the number of minutes before the auto-off occurs, but even though it's preset at 34 minutes the battery is still supposed to last a year. The back light is rather dim.

Do what it must do...giving the wind speed, easy to use. Just have to choose between the wind speed ( km/h, mph. or knots)
or the thermometer, this his weakness, don't be hurray to know the temperature, the sensor is inside. so you have to leave it for a while where you want to know the temperature. But, i did'nt bought it for this option so ....!!!
